NTI Appliance: A Remedy with Jaw Joint Relief

Migraines and headaches can be very painful and annoying! The blame could be on your own behalf. Many people clench their teeth and even grind them, and it usually happens while asleep. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is a common problem usually caused through clenching and grinding - and the NTI may just be the cure. The NTI (nociceptive trigeminal inhibitor) appliance is a type of mouthguard that might be able to help. The NTI appliance is a tension suppression system, which simply means it prevents the clenching action. No clenching means less wear and tear to your teeth, less jaw pain and even fewer migraines.

Teeth clenching and teeth grinding (bruxism) can do serious damage to your teeth over time. When you clench your teeth, you apply a huge amount of force to hold your upper and lower teeth together. This pressure is exerted when you grind, slowly wearing down the involved teeth. This can eventually lead to broken teeth, a chipped tooth filling or even tooth loss, which ultimately leads to more dental treatments.

How does it work?

The appliance is a strong type of polymer that fits over your top front teeth which allows only the front teeth to contact when jaw closes. These teeth are equipped with a reflex that inhibits clenching of the jaw. As long as the front teeth only touch, the pain caused by clenching is substantially reduced. You can demonstrate the function of the NTI appliance by feeling the muscles by your temples while clenching and comparing it to clenching onto a pencil placed between your front teeth.
